Students from West Bromwich Collegiate Academy took part in a residential visit to the Frank Chapman Outdoor Education Centre, completing a series of physically and mentally demanding outdoor challenges designed to develop resilience and teamwork.

The trip saw year 8 and year 9 students immersed in a structured programme of activities across the centre’s 90-acre ancient woodland site near Bewdley. From navigating woodland trails and tackling high ropes to fire-building and problem-solving tasks, learners were required to adapt quickly, support one another and step well beyond familiar routines.

As the residential progressed, many students demonstrated growing confidence, taking on leadership roles within group activities and approaching challenges with increasing independence.

Associate Principal, Hannah Percival, said: “Experiences like this are a valuable part of how young people learn to manage themselves and their decisions. In the classroom, much of their day is structured for them, but on a residential they have to navigate challenge, uncertainty and responsibility in a far more independent way.

“What matters is not just the activity itself, but how students respond to it, how they communicate under pressure, support one another and contribute to a team. These are the foundations of independence, and we want our students to leave school not only with strong academic outcomes, but with the confidence to handle new situations confidently.”

Throughout the visit, students demonstrated consistently high standards of behaviour and engagement across a demanding programme of activities. Their approach to teamwork and challenge reflected the Academy’s emphasis on responsibility, resilience and mutual support.
