Following our students’ huge successes in the programme this recent year, Apps for Good have featured West Bromwich Collegiate Academy in their promotional film!
The initiative, which allows students to further harness and enhance their interests and skillsets by applying them to real-world contexts, saw two of our teams reach the semi-finals, beating over 28,000 other students in the UK.
Both projects, Scan-Go, which helps consumers save money by showing more cost effective shopping options to support the cost of living crisis, and A-Z Safety, which helps individuals to discreetly report domestic abuse and offer support, reached the People’s Choice Award. With A-Z Safety winning the ‘Community Champions’ category.
Our Assistant Principal, Mrs Percival, also received this year’s Donna Hay Award for impact, which celebrates and recognises the impact of outstanding educators.
Mrs Percival said: “Apps for Good does fit with our broader vision as a school because what we are very passionate about here at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy is providing students with opportunities that they perhaps wouldn’t get otherwise and we want children to be able to take home experiences that they are going to remember for the rest of their lives.”
As part of the project, students work together to develop an app from scratch before pitching their ideas to industry experts, with students gaining many benefits and personal insights from their experiences.
Student Adael said: “I found out there are a lot of different jobs when it comes to app development and researcher development. Loads of different jobs and careers that I would say suit me, but I didn’t know about before.”
Many students comment that Apps for Good is one of their favourite themes at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, as it is very different for them from traditional classroom learning.
Year 8 student Amna said: “After doing this theme I know for sure that one subject I am going to pick for options is definitely computer science.”
