Community Languages

What are community languages?

We are a very diverse school and we are aware that a number of our students speak and study a range of languages outside of school. In some cases, we can support students in taking an extra GCSE in a language, provided that a GCSE examination in the language exists, and provided that the student is competent in speaking, reading, writing and listening.

We are also aware that some students may be taking language exams privately, outside of the Academy. For students to add these results to their overall GCSE results, the qualification must be taken in Year 10 or 11.

How can I take a GCSE in a Community language?

In order for you to take a community language you must be competent in the four skill areas:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening

We need to be confident that you will be able to get a good grade in the exam in order to make and pay for an exam entry.

While we will try to support with as many languages as possible, we cannot provide tuition in them. What we can provide is practise exam materials, mock examinations in school, feedback on these, and we will pay for and facilitate the examination entries.

Languages that are available to take as a GCSE are:

  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese)
  • French
  • Greek
  • Gujarati
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Panjabi
  • Persian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Turkish
  • Urdu

Please note – we do not offer these languages as option subjects and taught classes.

Please speak to Mrs McQueen, Examinations Officer, for more information on Community Languages.

If your child is taking a private languages GCSE, please also let us know by completing the form or by contacting our Examinations Officer, Mrs Raluca McQueen at exams@wbca.shirelandcat.net
