GCSE drama students from West Bromwich Collegiate Academy visited the Birmingham Hippodrome for an inspiring day of workshops and performances with international theatre company, Complicite.

Students took part in practical sessions led by the company, exploring a wide range of creative techniques that bring theatre to life. They then watched Complicite perform before taking part in a question-and-answer session, where they learned about careers in the arts, from acting and production to technical roles.

The visit gave students industry insight into how the skills they develop in the classroom can be applied to professional theatre. It also helped them shape ideas for their GCSE and Tech Award projects while providing a clearer understanding of potential career pathways in the arts.

George Faux, Executive Principal at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, said: “By engaging with professionals working at the highest level, students gain a clearer understanding of the breadth of opportunities within the creative industries. It also shows how their skills can translate and lead into future study and careers. Experiences like this play an important role in shaping their ambitions beyond secondary education.”

Complicite, led by Artistic Director and co-founder, Simon McBurney, has been creating innovative theatre for more than 40 years. The company works across theatre, opera, dance, film and installation, and runs an award-winning learning programme for schools and communities. Complicite also supports emerging artists from under-represented backgrounds, widening access to the arts.

Birmingham Hippodrome is one of the UK’s leading producing theatres, hosting a wide range of performances and educational programmes through its Birmingham Hippodrome Education Network. For students, it provides a unique chance to experience professional theatre first-hand and connect with people working in the creative industries.

The visit demonstrates West Bromwich Collegiate Academy’s commitment to providing students with practical experiences that inspire creativity, broaden horizons and deepen understanding of future opportunities.
