GCSE students explore engineering careers in university-led workshop

Year 11 students at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy took part in a hands-on engineering workshop designed to enhance classroom learning and encourage discussion about future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The session was led by Dr Ahmed Rezk, Reader and Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Aston University, who introduced students to the realities of studying and working as a mechanical engineer.

He demonstrated how maths and science underpin engineering practice, using engines and aerospace systems to show how concepts learned in school are applied in real world settings. Students were also given the opportunity to take part in a range of experiments, engaging directly with the principals being explored.

The workshop aimed to help students made clearer connections between their current studies and potential post-16 and post-18 pathways, while encouraging them to consider opportunities within engineering and the wider STEM industries.

Hannah Percival, Associate Principal at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, said: “We want our students to understand that maths and science aren’t just abstract subjects, but the foundation for careers that shape the modern world.

“Sessions like this are important because they show students the relevance of what they are learning in a practical context, particularly in areas like engineering where problem-solving and creativity go hand in hand. It also helps students understand what high expectations look like beyond school and supports them in making informed and confidence choices about their future.”

Aston University is a long-established, research-led institution founded in 1895 and a university since 1966. Based in the heart of Birmingham, it is home to around 18,000 students from more than 120 countries, and is known for its strong links to industry, world-class teaching and focus on employability.

At Aston, students regularly work on live projects, develop start-up ideas and undertake placements and internships, helping them prepare for careers beyond graduation. The university was named University of the Year for Student Success 2025 in the Daily Mail University Guide. It also ranked first in the UK in The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, recognising its work in fostering international partnerships and driving social impact.
