West Bromwich Collegiate Academy students score among top 2% worldwide in IQ test

12 students at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy have secured places in Mensa after achieving scores that placed them among the top 2% of the population worldwide in an approved intelligence test. The highest-scoring student was a Year 7 pupil, who achieved an impressive score of 162, while four students achieved scores of 159 or above and ten students achieved scores above 150.

The students demonstrated strong reasoning, problem-solving and critical thinking skills during the assessment, which challenged them through a series of complex questions designed to measure intellectual ability.

Founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Dr Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer, Mensa is an international society for people who achieve exceptional results in approved intelligence tests. The organisation now has around 17,000 members across the UK and Ireland and 140,000 members worldwide.

Hannah Percival, Associate Principal, said: “We are incredibly proud to see our students recognised with this fantastic achievement. What stands out most is the confidence they have gained from taking on a challenge like this and seeing what they are capable of.

“We want our young people to be curious, to challenge themselves and to recognise the strengths they bring, and this is a fantastic example of what can happen when they do that.”

The achievement reflects the ambition and academic curiosity of students at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, where young people are encouraged to embrace opportunities that develop their skills and broaden their experiences.
